Can road salt damage car paint, and how should I wash it off in winter?
Road salt and de-icing brines mainly threaten bare metal, chips, wheels and the underbody, where they accelerate corrosion, but salt crust can also dull and scratch paint when wiped dry. In winter, rinse the car thoroughly, including wheel wells and the underside, whenever conditions allow. Pre-soak heavy salt film before any contact wash, and never brush or wipe salt off a dry car. A protective coating or sealant makes salt release more easily.
