Can polishing permanently damage clear coat?
Yes. Polishing removes a microscopic amount of clear coat to level scratches, so overly aggressive or repeated polishing can reduce paint thickness and eventually compromise UV protection. Excessive heat from a machine, especially on edges, can also burn through the clear coat. Correction should remove only as much material as necessary, starting with the least aggressive combination that achieves the result.
