Do I need a paint thickness gauge before polishing?
It is strongly recommended for any significant correction, and essential on unknown or repainted cars. A gauge shows how much total paint exists and can reveal resprays, previous heavy polishing and thin areas before you remove more material. It cannot measure the clear coat separately on most cars, so conservative technique is still needed. For a light finishing polish on factory paint, the risk is much lower.
